VICE President for Africa Region at the World Bank, Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili, would be leaving that post in May this year after successful four-year tenure and an extra year of service at the global institution.

This is the second time in two weeks I will address you on the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. In the last seven days, the nation has witnessed a disruption of economic activities.  Although, the economic imperatives for the policy have been well articulated by government, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) went ahead to declare a nationwide strike.

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday asked the Senate to confirm Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Worried by the frequent demand for functional refineries in the country as a way out of petroleum products’ importation, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has disclosed that Nigeria will this week sign a formal contract for the planned turn-around maintenance (TAM) of all its traditional refineries with their original builders.

The once lucrative business of fuel smuggling along the Nigeria/Cameroon border in Adamawa and most border towns in Nigeria has been crippled following the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Speaking at the Palace of the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammad Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, Jonathan, who was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, lamented the inability of the people to enjoy the benefits of subsidy over the period of time the subsidy lasted.

The Minister of Petroleum Diezani Allison-Madueke says fuel subsidies accounts for the high level of corruption in the downstream oil sector and its removal will help cleanse the system. 

For the first time since the federal government removed the petroleum subsidy, the 36 governors of the federation have thrown their weight behind the government’s decision.

According to Business day, Christopher Kolade, chairman, Subsidy Investment and Empowerment Board, set up by President Goodluck Jonathan to oversee the investment of the savings from the petroleum subsidy removal , has pledged that the Board would profitably invest the savings for the good of Nigerians.

Although PPPRA is supposed to give license only to marketers with a national distribution network you see names of companies where u have never seen a filling station in their name. I was a chief risk officer in UBA and in FBN for many years approving loans so I know the name of every big player in every industry that nigerian banks lend to as these are among the biggest banks in the country. I see names on the list I don't recognise either from portfolios I looked at or industry studies over the years. Red alert number 2. 

Amidst oppostion to the removal of the subsidy on petrol from January 1, President Goodluck Jonathan has set up a committee headed by a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore to meet with organized labour and all other stakeholders to resolving issues that may arise from the decision.

Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has said that the time has come for governors and President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently go after the sponsors of the Boko Haram sect. “We know the sponsors of the sect,” said the governor.

The Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has assured Nigerians that this time around, removal of fuel subsidy would have a positive impact on their lives. Speaking at the NPAN Town Hall Meeting Thursday, she explained that the subsidy removal would allow for more transparency in the system, adding that it would make the sector attractive to potential investors.

Jonathan to review economic policies to facilitate foreign investment. Several heads of states
and presidents yesterday assured President Goodluck Jonathan that they would do all they
could to ensure that Nigeria represented Africa by taking up a permanent seat in the United
Nations Security Council.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC ,Monday evening declared
President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party , PDP , as the winner of the
presidential election held across the country last Saturday

President Goodluck Jonathan has won a big enough share of votes across the country's 36
states to avoid facing an election run-off if he also wins an overall majority, a Reuters tally
showed on Sunday.

President Jonathan cleared all the votes in ward 13, unit 039 in his Otuoke, Bayelsa State, country
home where he voted. The presiding officer, Mr. Muyiwa Orojo, announced that the PDP polled 413
to zero votes by other parties.

 

The former governor of oil-rich Delta state was extradited from Dubai to the UK to face the
charges. He was arrested in Dubai last May and lost an appeal against his extradition. He
denies allegations of corruption. Mr Ibori is a senior figure in Nigeria's governing People's
Democratic Party (PDP).

Africa's most populous nation will be attempting to hold its cleanest election for head of state in nearly two decades on Saturday, with parliamentary polls the week before seen as a major step forward.

 

President Jonathan said."I thank Nigerians for the large turnout during the National Assembly
elections held last Saturday and urge them all to turn out en masse during the presidential
elections next Saturday, and the subsequent elections, to vote for candidates of their choice,"

 

“If at the end of the election on Saturday there is no clear winner we will make a
decision on which way to go, in the overriding interest of all Nigerians,” he said
